CovaMed's technology is based on a protein gel adhesive that is designed to combine four characteristics important in the surgical environment: speed, ease of use, strength and biocompatibility. The technolology has widespread applications in the medical industry as not only a stand-alone product, but also as an enabling technology for other medical, pharmaceutical and bio-technology. Additionally, CovaMed's technology lends itself to multiple applications within minimally invasive surgery.

SPEED

CovaMed's technology does not require refrigeration or freezing allowing the products to be stored at room temperature. Furthermore, the products do not require any pre-mixing and are packaged in pre-filled double barrel syringes. This allows them to be ready for use in less than 30 seconds.

EASE OF USE

There is no mixing, heating or curing required with CovaMed's products. The two components are mixed via a replaceable static mixer at the end of the double-barrel syringe. The adhesive begins polymerizing instantly. Additionally, there is no requirement for capital equipment such as lights for curing or mixing/stirring devices.

STRENGTH

The adhesive and cohesive strength of CovaMed's products are significantly higher than most competitive sealants on the market. In terms of burst strength, CovaMed's products are able to withstand pressures that far exceed physiological pressures and have been found to be at least 10 times stronger than commercially available fibrin sealants and at least five times stronger than commercially available PEG sealants.

BIOCOMPATIBILITY

CovaMed's technology, while providing ease of use and high strength, has also been found to be biocompatible in preliminary tests.

MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY

CovaMed's technology can be delivered using special catheters to allow its usage in minimally invasive surgical procedures. This includes the potential to replace the need for suturing and/or stapling allowing more procedures to be performed using minimally invasive surgical techniques.
